President’s Letter- March 2020

March 30, 2020

March 19, 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

I know you all are smart enough to follow the CDC recommendations as we go
through these trying times and to know we will not have meetings again until it is
safe to do so. Let’s talk about something else.

The Board has voted to move forward with changing our name from the Federation
of Citizens Associations to the Federation of Community Associations. Why would
an organization started in 1910 change their name in 2020? Well, for most of those
years we recognize we were a racist organization. There would be no Federation of
Civic Associations if we had allowed the negro associations to join our Federation.
This occurred in the 1950s but the animosity this act engendered lives on until this
day. We are no longer that organization and haven’t been for a long time. Also, the
word citizen is fine for most people, but it reminds people of color of the white
citizens councils that enforced Jim Crow laws all over the South.

This is your organization and we want to hear from you on this proposed change.
We also request that you let your membership know of this proposed change and
let them know we would like to hear from them as well. I can be reached at
president@dccitizensfederation.org or 202-584-2703.
If you have paid your 2020 dues of $100, thank you. If you haven’t yet, please remit
soon. You can even pay in our website, dccitizensfederation.org. We don’t fund
raise. We use dues payments to fund all our efforts.
Please stay safe and healthy.

Warm Regards,

Earl Williams
President

President’s Letter- November 2019

November 11, 2019

November 7, 2019

Dear Members and Friends,

The Office of Planning has released 1500 pages of changes to the Comprehensive Plan which has the potential to change all our neighborhoods. We recognize that most of us don’t have the capacity to read and understand what these changes mean to us.

The Federation has again put together a panel of experts to explain what the changes are and their potential impact. Please join us on November 19 at 441 4th Street NW from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM to hear their opinions and ask your questions.

Best Regards,
Earl Williams
President

President’s Letter- September 2019

September 4, 2019

September 4, 2019

Dear Members and Friends,

I hope you have all had a fun filled and productive summer. However, with the end of summer we, just like all of all of you get back to work.

We are pleased to announce a new member organization, Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (mhcdo.org). They are a storied organization in our city. This brings us to 25 member organizations and we continue to grow. We ask that you encourage your friends and organizations to add their names and email addresses in our website, dccitizensfederation.org.

Our next general assembly will be held on September 24, 2019 at 441 4th Street NW on the 11th floor from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Our guest speaker will be Parisa Norouzi, Executive Director of Empower DC. Parisa is leading a grassroots effort on the Comp Plan and affordable housing in DC. Please come out and bring someone with you. These are important discussions.

I know it’s early but save the date. Our holiday party will be held on December 2. More information to follow.

Best Regards,
Earl Williams
President
